30 June 2020

Geneva ( Switzerland ): While the Covid-19 crisis is affecting the whole of humanity in various ways, posing a far-reaching threat to human rights, it brings to light our responsibility to ensure we do not return to behaviours that leave the vast majority of the human family behind. The webinars series was held to discuss climate change and human rights from an ethical and spiritual perspective, bringing together a diversity of voices.

This series of short webinars are promoted by the Geneva Interfaith Forum on Climate Change, Environment and Human Rights (comprised of the World Council of Churches, the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, Dominicans for Justice and Peace, Franciscans International, the Lutheran World Federation, and Soka Gakkai International) on the occasion of the 44th Session of the Human Rights Council.

Panel 1 was held on the topic Human Rights, Ethics and Climate Change on Wednesday 17 June from 13:00 to 14:00 PM CET.

This first panel aimed at engaging grassroots partners, informing the general public, and proposing a spiritual perspective.

Yves Lador (Earthjustice), Tetet Nera-Lauron (Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung), Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim (Association of Peul Women and Autochthonous Peoples of Chad or AFPAT), Yeb Saño (Greenpeace Southeast Asia) and BK
Sister Jayanti (Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University) addressed the panel.

The moderator of the panel was Valeriane Bernard (Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University).

The Sanskrit word ‘Yoga’ means Connection or Union.

In a philosophical/spiritual sense it denotes the connection with the Higher Self and Awakening Self-awareness. This afternoon we will explore various aspects of ‘Yoga’.

Connection with the Body

Healthy mind, healthy body is a “new age” mantra. It is recognised that in a holistic model of well-being, paying attention to our physical body is very important. Good nourishing food, water, fresh air, exercise are all components of maintaining a healthy body. Our bodies are intelligent systems that benefit from the yogic connection with healthy thoughts and mind set.

Speaker : Clarke Peters
The word ‘versatile’ really doesn’t begin to describe the multi-faceted career of actor, singer, writer and director Clarke Peters. With a career spanning more than four decades, Clarke Peters works seamlessly across theatre, film and TV. He penned and performed in the multi award-winning musical Five Guys Named MoeClarke. Peters credits his faith with keeping his feet firmly on the ground. “In this world of turmoil and unrest, I find peaceful meditation a tool to neutralise the negative.”

Connection with the Community
Every part of the physical body is working in Yoga or union with every other part. The body itself is a ‘community’ of various parts working in unison to maintain good health and equilibrium. Similarly, human beings living together, working towards a common, shared purpose makes the community cohesive.

Speaker: Ketan Sheth
Ketan Sheth is a Councillor for Tokyngton, Wembley Hill & Wembley Park in the London Borough of Brent. He Chairs the Brent Council’s Community and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee and is a member of North West London Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee. He is a lawyer by profession and sits on a number of public bodies, including as Chairman of the Valuation Tribunal for England and Lead Governor of the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust.  He has special interest in Community Cohesiveness.

Connection with the Self
On our spiritual journey we will grow and develop by learning to answer one question. WHO AM I? When meditating and practicing Yoga of the mind I am learning to know and connect with my true identity, ‘I am the Soul’.

Speaker : Aashish Patel
Aashish Patel is an engaged practitioner of Raja Yoga and its teaching for more than 15 years. As a commercial director within the IT services sector, he has interest in promoting a value-based culture within business and in encouraging the application of spiritual principles and meditation to increase self-awareness and personal growth.

Connection with the Higher Source
Connecting with the Higher Source is about practicing meditation. This Yoga connects us to our Spiritual Source, when we are still and silent, when we take our focus from the outer to the inner space. We are then able to easily access knowledge and wisdom.

Speaker : Maureen Goodman
Maureen Goodman is the Programme Director for the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, UK, and the Brahma Kumaris representative at the United Nations, Vienna. Working in the area of inter-religious dialogue nationally and internationally for more than 30 years, Maureen serves on several committees, including the World Congress of Faiths, and is the Co-convenor of the Inner Voice Dialogues, exploring the spiritual dimension of dialogue. She has helped develop the University’s outreach work in the UK, in prisons, healthcare, education, youth and women’s issues.  Maureen also travels widely giving workshops and lectures on themes related to spiritual development.

Moderator : Rachel Priestman
A former PR and arts management consultant, Rachel Priestman has been studying and practising RajaYoga for 16 years. She is amazed by the changes it has enabled her to make in her life, so that it is now more peaceful and purposeful – and infinitely more enjoyable.  Based in London, she helps the Brahma Kumaris national coordinating office with communications, writing projects and public events.
