Anubhuti News: Fire Evacuees & Diwali Celebration in North Bay, California

19 October 2017

Dear Divine Family,

Thank you so much for all your words of support and powerful vibrations from around the world. It really gave us a feeling of connection with Baba and the BK global family. The Northern California fires are gradually being contained at 70 to 90%. The families that stayed with us in Anubhuti Retreat Center took so much benefit. Every evening we would have meditation and class for them.

Diwali at Anubhuti:

The weather conditions allowed us to go ahead with our Diwali Program last Saturday, October 14, for 200 people. It lifted the community’s spirits and created a spiritual bond of love. The slogan for those who have been evacuated by the fires is, “Love is heavier than smoke.” We were enlightened by words of our main speaker BK Chandru Didi; along with Jim Paymar, Journalist; Communication Specialist; March Noguchi, Interfaith leader, and Sr. Perla. We were enchanted by live music by Br. Stephen and Sr. Kyoko; songs by Sr. Elizabeth and Sr. Kyoko; and Odissi dance.

North Bay Fire Service Meeting:

The North Bay Hindu Temple, the Bay Area Indian Association, and neighboring people from other religions gathered the next morning at the Retreat Center. There were more than 90 people who came and shared their heroic stories escaping the fires. Many had lost their homes. Then they discussed different ideas and pulled their resources together to connect all the different volunteer groups who had come and build a network of services and support. Chandru Didi gave a talk, Sr. Elizabeth sang a song of “Blessings” and Sr. Hema met with each and every one. They continued their discussions over Brahma Bhogan and left spiritually filled.

It has been an inspiring sequence of events, witnessing how Baba and Drama converted a frightening and traumatic event into a week of unending service of upliftment and transformation. We welcomed 9 families who had been evacuated. They themselves said that they were so fortunate to arrive in such a spiritual and sacred place. We witnessed how their faces blossomed while they enjoyed Baba’s vibrations and the company of the BK family.

Much love and heartfelt gratitude.

In BapDada's remembrance,

BK Chandru, Sr. Hema and Sr. Elizabeth

Emergency Charity Funds

13 October 2017

Dear Center/ Class Coordinators,

Om shanti and loving greetings on behalf of Sr.Mohini and NY family.

The last few weeks have certainly got us all thinking deeply about our part as Baba's children while witnessing the scenes of natural disasters and turmoil in different parts of the world, some of them very close to us. There have been many inquiries and requests for us as BKs from the USA to have an emergency charity fund established for helping these areas in concrete ways.

Please be reminded that we have Point of Life Foundation working closely with Brahma Kumaris and legally set up as a tax exempt organization in the US to handle this kind of charity. We will then be directing the funds as per the need and as per the opportunities available. For example, we have an opportunity now to direct them towards water supply in Puerto Rico through a local authority in Long Island, New York.

We are encouraging and requesting anyone who wants to donate towards national / international emergency relief efforts to please send your donations as checks  to Point of Life Foundation and mail to Global Harmony House, 46 South Middle Neck Road, Great Neck, NY 11021.

Also, as we continue the efforts in various disasters that have happened and yet to happen, if you have any reliable leads on the best use of the funds and / or reliable channels for ensuring that the funds are utilized well, we welcome that information.

With Baba's love and remembrances,

Kala for Sr.Mohini

News of Anubhuti & Northern California Wildfires: BK Family Safe in Baba's Service

13 October 2017

To Our Divine Family,

Thank you, everyone, for your heartfelt good wishes and concern for our well-being. Many of you have been calling and asking how we are doing because of the threat of the Northern California Wild Fires since Sunday evening (8-Oct). On Monday at midnight Sister Chandru called from our San Francisco Center warning us of a breakout of wildfires near Baba’s Anubhuti Retreat Center in Novato north of San Francisco. Brother Duane kept watching through the night. I woke up to the smell of heavy smoke at 3:00 AM. We could see the red hills in flames at Sears Point, which is only 9 miles from us. The winds were blowing at 50 miles an hour so you have to be prepared to move out quickly.

On Monday morning at 6:00 AM we started to receive calls from contacts who were being forced to evacuate. We welcomed 8 families to the Retreat Center. Three of the families left their homes at 2:00 AM as a wave of fire destroyed their neighborhood in East Santa Rosa. The other families in Santa Rosa lived near Coffey Park and fled the smoke and flames, moving south towards San Francisco by car with their young families until they reached here. (Photos attached of families and the red sun shone through 100% smoke)

The fire at Sears Point is still smoldering and is 90% contained. There is still a lot of smoke in the air from that and the other 8 major fires. People are wearing face masks. You have to drive with your head lights on in the day. So far, thanks to Baba, yoga, and Drama, we are safe.

You have to be so strong. It is one thing for a community to absorb a loss or tragedy but this is a situation where whole communities are being wiped out and evacuation centers are also being evacuated. We've never seen anything like it because most fires are in the wild and here it's in the heart of whole cities and towns. We are working with local volunteer organizations, such as the North Bay Hindu Temple and Center of Volunteer and Non-profit Leaders (CVNL)

The Firefighters can only contain about 3% - 10% of fires due to dry conditions and unpredictable and high winds. There have been 24 deaths reported so far, 463 people uncounted for, 35,000 people evacuated, 170,000 acres have been burned, and about 3,500 structures have been destroyed.

We are very grateful and fortunate. Baba says that now is the time for the game of “suddenly” and that is exactly what we are witnessing. Thank you all for your love and yoga power.

Much love in BapDada’s remembrance,

BK Elizabeth and BK Hema on behalf of Sister Chandru and the San Francisco Family

Brief News from Anubhuti & S. California Re: Fires Burning in Sonoma  & Napa Counties

10 October 2017

From Sr Elizabeth: Air quality is dangerous here in Novato. We are accommodating seven families who have been evacuated from Sonoma County. Three of them lost their homes to the ground in Fountain Grove. We could see a local fire this morning from the Retreat Center. It was at Sears Point but that is now under control. Life is precious. The families are doing fine; handling it really well. We are safe. Feeling grateful.

From Sr Diane: We are meditating for souls in the Anubhuti area and also for those affected by the fire here. Rutunj and family are safe. The fire went south instead of north.

Week 2: 21 Day Program to Prepare for Diwali

6 October 2017

Dear Baba’s Beloved Instruments:

As Diwali is fast approaching each of you must be preparing to celebrate the festival with the Brahmin family as well as doing public programs. With knowledge, we understand that all the festivals that people celebrate are in-fact a memorial of our life at this confluence age.  At this time, we perform elevated actions by following shrimat.  These elevated actions and our elevated stage become an inspiration for many souls in the world; our state of perfection and elevated actions become imprinted in their consciousness and in the copper age they create memorials based on this.

Attached is a program for us to prepare our inner stage so that we can serve through the characteristics of Lakshmi, our divine stage.  There are 21 characteristics of Lakshmi which will be shared with you.  Week 2 is attached. We hope the last week will reach you byFriday, October 13.

The program is a very simple and easy one and is from October 2 — 22.  It has two features:  awareness and practice.  Awareness of the characteristics of Lakshmi that are remembered on the path of devotion in the Copper and Iron Ages; and practice that Baba is telling us to do at the  Confluence Age.  This awareness and practice will help us to be the embodiment of our divinity and to serve with the light of our pure feelings during this time of the season of lights.  I encourage to share this with the BKs at your center, so that they have an opportunity to participate in this collective effort.

Also attached is a message that you may wish to share with the family.

Tuesday Night Insight Series. Empowering the Self Through Positive Thinking

This popular topic helped souls become more aware of their thoughts, so they could gain control and choose what to think. Through positive thinking they learned the ability to bring about peace of mind, personal happiness, and value in their lives.

Facilitator: Karen Perusse

Hurricane Irma

As Hurricane Irma visited the Tampa area, the center prepared. Three angels, Shireen, Helen and Karen stayed in the center throughout the storm. Although nature was playing her part outside, inside there was happiness and contentment as we experienced Baba's canopy of protection. The center was not damaged in any way and never even lost electricity.

After the storm, we were quickly able to open our doors and resume normal classes. Many came in order to recover mentally, emotionally and here for detailed report with more photos.

Hurricane Irma News from Miami

16 September 2017

Beloved family,

Excuse our tardiness in responding but have not had much access to cell connectivity or internet.  Just since yesterday have our (in Miami area) cell phones been able to handle more than texts.  A big old avocado tree fell on our power lines which has minimized the electricity into the center but at least we have some lights, a fridge and a few outlets working.  In this 33C temperature we are missing air conditioning, hot water,  and a stove but no damage to the house (apart from loss of vegetation) and all BKs are safe and gradually getting back on the electrical grid.  Fortunately Irma (bless her) first made land in the US as a Category 4 (130 MPH winds) just slightly west of Miami which made things so much better for us.  Unfortunately that is not the case for those just south of us including some of the Caribbean islands.

Hurricanes are so beneficial and are simply doing their allotted house cleaning of both the ocean and the land which unfortunately is now overrun by people.  I really get it when Baba says that in SY we will live by the sweet waters.  The contrast in Kali yug is that living by the beach is both desirable and indicative of status.  Even now we are keeping an eye on the next couple of  systems - Juan and the others as yet unnamed as they try to gather strength in the warm waters between Africa and here.

Again everyone's concern is so appreciated.  Thanks Kiran.

With love

Hurricane Irma News from Tampa

12 September 2017

Dear Divine Family,
Warm greetings filled with love.  We literally and figuratively had a hurricane blow through Tampa.  Amazingly enough we at the center didn’t lose power.  Possibly the only ones around here that didn’t lose power!
In hindsight I think we over prepared for the storm.  For days, we had to take everything outside that a130mph (210 kph) wind could use as a projectile - That meant all the plant holders (I didn’t realize we had so many!) and the signs and . . .  We also had to prepare for enough washing and drinking water, food, and the list goes on and on.
Anyway, thanks to Baba and Drama though the eye of the storm passed really close by (about 20 miles east of us) we didn’t even lose power for too long. It flickered a few times but not enough to even bother the ice cream in the freezer. They were expecting a Category 3 Hurricane but by the time it came to Tampa it was just Category 2.  With wind speeds of about 110 mph (175kph) we had a nice show stopper of a storm blow over us for about 6 hours.
It is a bright, beautiful, sunny morning today – it feels like nothing has ever happened.  The only tell tale signs of the storm are the City of Tampa trucks going around our neighborhoods clearing out the debris.
All Baba’s children are safe.  Many of them still don’t have power but all of them are safe.  Thank you Drama, Baba, and the good wishes of the family.  We had so many emails and phone calls from all over the world sending us their good wishes and yoga power that I’m sure that played a role in the impact of the storm not being so severe.  Thank you for your sakaash.
In Baba’s Love and Light,

Columbia-Greene Media publishes article for Peace Village Awakening program

TANNERSVILLE — Peace Village hosted a celebration of spirit and awakening Sunday afternoon with special guest Sister Shivani, an Indian spiritual teacher and inspirational speaker with a YouTube account with over 150,000 subscribers.

“We want to bring the idea that all of us have the ability to make a shift in our way of thinking,” said Kala Iyengar, director of Peace Village. “We want to change the way we interact with people, the environment and ourselves.”

“It is a spiritual awakening — when it happens, one begins to see change in the world around them. That’s what this program is about — raising awareness to how we can be more positive in our approach.”

The event joined over 2,000 people at the learning and retreat center, which opened in 1999. It featured spiritual exhibits, live music, group meditation, food and many guest speakers.

“The event is fabulous,” said Arjoon Lal, a student at Peace Village as well as one of the main organizers of the event. “A lot of planning went into this.”

It took nearly three months to plan the event, Lal said.

“Knowing how much effort goes into it and then you see it happen — it’s a marvelous feeling,” Lal added.

Students at Peace Village have been requesting Sister Shivani’s visit, said Lal.

As the last stop of her first-ever tour in North America, Sister Shivani finally got to visit Peace Village as her grand finale.

“When am I going to feel different? I am in America and I’ve never been here,” said Sister Shivani during her speech. “I feel the same love, unity, purity, enthusiasm and respect as I do in India.”

“I’ve met thousands of souls and everyone wants the same thing — everyone wants peace. The vibration is the same as in Inida — if the vibration is the same, we’re united.”

Tannersville Mayor Lee McGunnigle was one of the event’s honored guests.

“I’m so grateful, honored and moved to be invited,” he said on stage Sunday afternoon. “Peace Village’s work can’t be measured — I’m so grateful you have picked this spot, so many have come to Tannersville to find healing.”

This was the second event of Sister Shivani’s tour for Joe Fulginiti, 27, of New York City. “I went to the one in White Plains and had a good experience the first time,” he said. “That one was much smaller, probably about 300 people and it was in a gymnasium.”

“I really like the location here — it’s very calming and gives a sense of perspective,” he added.

“This event was much larger. I’m glad it was outdoors on this perfect day.”

“This is great for the mountain top,” said Gary Hommel, 63, of Haines Falls. “The locals don’t realize what we have, and these people do.”

“Stuff like this is fabulous to me — we need more stuff like this. The more we get, the better it is up here,” he added.

Announcing: Hope in Healthcare Retreat - Peace Village, October 6 - 8, 2017

2 August 2017

Dear Family,

Om shanti and greetings from Peace Village. In the recent weeks and months, I know that many have been served through the Awakening and other programs . It was great to notice that in many of the cities where the program was held there was a number of physicians and other healthcare professionals in close contact with centers who took benefit. Also, there were suggestions made at several of the gatherings to take advantage of Peace Village as a place that offers all the elements to go deeper into their spirituality. This email is a sweet reminder to this effect.

Please see the invitation below for our next Hope in Healthcare retreat on October, 6-8, 2017. We ask that you share it freely with your physician, nurse and other professional contacts in healthcare. I know that many in this area of work are often looking for the connection between the spiritual practice and what happens at work. This was apparent at Sr.Shivani's address to the AAPI (Association of American Physians from India) group at their annual convention on June 23rd. These Hope in Healthcare retreats have provided a wonderful forum to clarify among many things, the aspect of how spiritual thinking can not only fit into a busy professional and service life but can also enhance it. We write with the hope that you can inspire some of your students and contacts in the field to consider attending.

Thank you,

In remembrance,

Sr.Kala for the Retreat Design Team

Dear Healthcare Professionals - Colleagues and Friends,

Whether or not you have in the past participated in one or the other of these Hope in Healthcare events, we invite you to join and add your energy and insights to this exploration with other visionaries like yourself, whose values are shaping the way we think about integrating spirituality into our own lives and ultimately into our healthcare practices.

Honoring Didi ManMohini: A Pillar of Great Strength

(Saturday, we will have a special Yoga, and Sunday Sr. Mohini will conduct a class after Murli in Tyson( remote.)

Om Shanti. Today marks the 34th year since the soul of Didi left the role of Didi Manmohini. I was not around when Didi was playing her part, but what I learned from others was the following:

1. She was a pillar
2. Dadiji's best friend
3. Had a very deep love for Baba
4. Her drishti would take you beyond
5. She was very accurate.
6. She was Baba's right arm.
7. She was simple. And was balance in maintaining love and law.
8. She had great discerning powers.

What I have felt when I would remember Didi was a deep stability, power, truth and depth. When we remember such jewels we too inherit in a subtle way some beautiful sanskars they took from Brahma Baba and Baba.

Did you know she was also Sr. Mohini's teacher and also an instrument very instrumental for Dadi Janki?

Below Article.

Different levels of effort make it possible to do different levels of mental service. The first level of mental service is of myself, then secondly of people I come into contact with, people I am related to, then thirdly people I know who are very far away, then fourthly people I don’t know throughout the whole world and the elements of nature. When I practice mental service, there is no battling within myself because there is always something to do. I am always using my time, my thoughts and my treasures in a worthwhile way.

For mental service, I have to keep my mind free from my own worry, my selfish thoughts. That is a stage when there are no complaints, no excuses, and no problems. As my yoga stage elevates I become full, automatically I am lifted beyond such limitations and I just bestow. I don’t trace who has received my good wishes of love. When I use my time in a worthwhile way, on a subtle level I feel the self being filled with blessings. Because souls got help at the right time from God, from their heart feelings of good wishes are sent and these fill my heart. Then my effort becomes easy.

Sometimes people ask, ‘How can you be so easy?’ You don’t see the Dadis feeling pain or sadness even though they are settling karmas through the body. This is because of the blessings they receive for the service they do through their thoughts. They are always giving in the mind. As Dadi says, Baba will look after service. I have to look after my stage. Pay 90% attention to look after your stage and pay 10% attention for service and in Madhuban, even that 10% is not necessary. Then whatever attention we pay to 10%, we get 100%. Didi Manmohini always gave this formula. Dadi was sharing a story of her experience almost thirty years ago when Didi Manmohini and Dadi Janki went somewhere in India for service. Dadi Janki was very good at speaking knowledge and she would speak for one or two hours to people, but Didi Manmohini was not one for giving classes or speaking. She would meet people for five minutes but her drishti was so powerful that she would take people into an experience. Dadi Janki wondered: what does she do? I spoke to the same souls for so many hours, and they were not able to experience as much as when they were with Didi.

Serving through the mind happens when you are spending time with someone and you are really giving time to them. There are genuine feelings that that soul needs to get what you have got from Baba. Dadi Janki also shares with us her feeling of being close to Baba when we are in front of her, because her feeling is that whatever Baba has given her, you should have the same experience. There is a genuine deep feeling in her heart, and when she looks at you with that feeling, you get the experience of also being in front of Baba. That mental service is possible when I have given myself sustenance over a long period of time.

To sustain myself means to be a mother to myself, just as a mother would look after her child. Giving time to myself and sustaining myself, then my spiritual growth will be healthy. On that basis, we can serve through the mind on all four levels. Because of that mental service, our thoughts will automatically become powerful. According to the present time and the opportunity, our efforts can become refined efforts.

It is time to go Home

Didi Manmohini:

CAME AND GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN because of the special role she played in the True Avinashi Ashwamegh Rudra Gita Gyan Yagya and the inspiration, sustenance and exemplary sample to so many.

Those of us who had the fortune to meet her in person cannot forget her special sweet and deep dristi taking souls beyond, total love for Baba and Baba’s task.

Meeting her between the years 1982-83 on several occasions was like living in her presence not for about one year but ten years. The transformation experience of recognizing this time of the confluence age, the time to go home leaves an indelible impact and the effort we need to make.

The month of July awakens the memory of a hero actor within this huge unlimited drama.

Those who may not have met her would know of Manmohini Complex at Shantivan in her honour.

Didi Manmohini was a main server from the time of establishment of this Godly Spiritual University. In 1937, when Baba established this Godly University and created a trust of kumaris and mothers surrendering all his movable and immovable property to them, Didi Manmohini ji was one of those special members of that trust. From then Baba would gave her many duties related to taking care of the kumaris and mothers. And she became a special helper of the yagya mother Saraswati ji. Didiji was Mama’s right hand.

After the partition in 1951, when preparations were to be made for this organization to move from Sindh to another place, Baba sent Didiji for this task. And it was Didi ji who made all the enquiries and selected Mount Abu for this purpose.

She was a skillful administrator. Starting from 1951-1952 (when Godly service began) she did lots of administrative work. After January 1969 when Prajapita Brahma became avyakt she did service together with Dadi Prakashmani as Additional Dadi and Didi were doing this administrative work together for 14 years and during that period they never had any conflicts between them and never criticized each other. They would always say, ‘Though we have different bodies, the soul is one.’ Seeing their unity and love people were amazed by their skillful administration work. The visible fruit of that unity is that by 1983 this institution already had about 1150 centres and sub-centres throughout the world.

Didi Manmohini left her mortal coil on the 28th July 1983.

Interfaith event seeks to promote goodness in all faiths

31 July 2017

Source: The Augusta Chronicle ( Posted July 14, 2017 by Charmain Z Brackett, Correspondent

For the 2015 interfaith gathering, The Balshala, or children’s group, at the Hindu temple in Augusta recited ‘Lingashtakam’ as the opening prayer. Many faith groups including Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and others plan to participate in the program planned for July 22.

An upcoming event will bring together believers from different faiths to focus on one thing — how random acts of goodness can create an atmosphere of happiness.

“We want to do an interfaith dialogue,” said Dr. Shvetank Agarwal, associate professor and section chief of cardiothoracic anesthesia at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Agarwal is coordinating the event at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at the Hindu Temple on Luke Road off Wrightsboro Road.

Agarwal is part of a group called Brahma Kumaris, which promotes meditation.

A panel of speakers will discuss goodness and its basis in various religions at the July 22 event. Also, Ram Sangal, another member of Brahma Kumaris, who is an engineer and survivor of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, will be the keynote speaker.

Sangal is part of the 7 Billion Acts of Goodness campaign, which is “an intiative designed to exponentially increase expressions of benevolence in the world. It is a movement based on the spiritual truth that goodness is innate, and that by cultivating a spiritual awareness of the self, we can tap into this inherent goodness in a way that makes us capable of generating unlimited acts of goodness,” according to the 7 Billion Acts of Goodness website,

Sangal spoke in the area last year and about 70 people attended, but it was only open to a small group of people, said Agarwal.

“He’s a very good speaker. He’s very enthusiastic,” he said

This year, they wanted to open it up to a larger group of people and include those of other faiths. And the more people Agarwal talked to about the event, the more momentum it gained.

“This time we expect much more,” he said.

Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and those of other faiths have expressed an interest in attending and are excited about coming together, he said.

Agarwal said the hope is that through the dialogue people will be able to see that those of different faiths have more in common than they realize and that most religions hold the same tenets of goodness in their foundations.

The event is free. To register, visit

As reported in News India Times:  Brahma Kumaris hold 'Spiritual Awakening Series' in Chicago

CHICAGO, IL: More than 4,000 Chicagoans came to listen to a yogi from India on June 29 and July 1, who came to inspire them by her teachings on how an individual’s feelings and treatment of others determine their level of happiness.

Sister Shivani, who is on a 20-day tour of North America, dwelt upon how feelings of love and forgiveness are natural to humans, while anger, resentment and revenge are unnatural.

Originally an electrical engineer in Pune, Sister Shivani began studying Raja Yoga meditation with the Brahma Kumaris 20 years ago.  Now she is a teacher of Raja Yoga meditation. Through her TV show “Awakening with Brahma Kumaris” that airs in 160 countries across 5 continents and a YouTube channel that has registered 180,000 subscribers and over 34 millions views, Sister Shivani carries on that work.

Audience at UTC Pavilion.

On July 1, she was presented an award from YouTube for having achieved over 100,000 subscribers, according to an Asian Media USA report.

Her main message has been about the need to understand what really makes a person happy.  Two things definitely do not work, she says. One is, absorbing hurtful words or actions from another person, as if one is obliged to accept them.  The second is “copying” – giving people back the same energy they give us.

Both of these strategies make people behave as victims, and victims are never happy, Sister Shivani says.

What does make one happy is doing the right thing — treating everyone with love, kindness and respect, and in so doing, receive that good energy first.  Sister Shivani encouraged the audience to exercise their power of choice by sending kind thoughts every day to people who have hurt them.  Over time, this will increase one’s self esteem and diminish hurt feelings, she says.

The July 1 program opened with a musical invocation of peace and love by Sister Elizabeth Padilla, a singer and Brahma Kumaris teacher from San Francisco. The program was emceed by Eric LeReste, a TV news producer for CBC in Montreal and National Coordinator of Brahma Kumaris for Canada. Consul General of India in Chicago Neeta Bhushan was in attendance as was Swami Shardananda of Chinmaya Mission of Chicago and Shiva Singh Khalsa of Spirit Rising Yoga.

Sister Shivani’s tour of North America includes programs in 11 cities and a culminating celebration was scheduled for July 9, at the Peace Village Learning & Retreat Center in upstate New York.

USA Independence Day Celebrations in California's Capitol (Sacramento)

24 July 2017

Interdependence Day was celebrated in Sacramento on July 4, 2017, where Brahmakumaris Sacramento was invited as well to represent the diverse faiths and nationalities of local community at the “International World Peace Rose Garden” (IWPRG) at the “State Capitol” for a global meditation from 9am to 10am. This event was immediately followed by InterDependence Day Festival at Southside Park from 10am to 2pm.

The organization IWPRG is a catalyst for peace in diverse communities around the world. The nonprofit organization incorporated in 1988 for the purpose of creating beautiful rose gardens for peace on public, accessible sites. The gardens become magnetic centers where people gather, enjoy beauty and are inspired to be better persons and world citizens.

Children lighted the way for us by carrying Quality of Peace Flowers and inflatable solar powered lanterns from Rebuilding Alliance’s - Brighten the Future of Gaza's Children Program.

The event was streamed live on Facebook LIVE, so others around the world may join in and those around the nation are invited to take part at their own state capitols.

Living Values Education Newsletter, June 2017

24 July 2017

Belén Romero, the former Focal Point for LVE in Venezuela

translated "Nurturing with Love and Wisdom, Disciplining with Peace and Respect: A mindful guide to parenting" by Diane G. Tillman.  Belén recently moved to the USA and joined the LVEP, Inc. Board of Directors. We are delighted to have her with us. Many, many thanks to Belén, for her wonderful work.

Natasha Panzer, a wonderful person, educator and LVE Facilitator based in New York, wrote the following review of the mindful parenting guide.

"Diane's thoughtful book is now my 'go to' when I am having a parenting dilemma or just need a bit of support to reinforce my parenting values. The book is filled with useful ideas for parents facing all sorts of parenting issues. Since purchasing this book, I have used many of Diane's techniques of active listening and conflict resolution to help my children navigate difficult situations with a true sense of love, compassion and responsibility. My family has benefited from my renewed calm that this book has helped me grow and maintain. Diane has beautifully infused her many years of experience as a school psychologist and Living Values educator into this parenting guide. It is full of practical ideas for parents to try when they are facing discipline issues or when trying to help their children navigate this increasingly complex, and often negative, world. I found the section on handling technology specifically useful and my children and I have had very purposeful and meaningful conversations about the benefits and drawbacks of technology use in our lives since reading this section. I no longer need to be a mommy witch who forbids my child from playing violent or inhumane games on our iPad. This book gave me tools to talk with my son about the objectionable content I was seeing in many video games in a way he could really appreciate. My son has now learned to only choose games that reflect the values of our family on his own. Even at six years old, he has now learned to be thoughtful about the way violent games normalize cruelty and he is wary of it. If creating a values-based atmosphere in your home is important to you- a place where love, peace, honesty and kindness are cornerstones - then this is the guide book for you."

Join us for an inspiring weekend to reflect on values and a paradigm and process that builds relationship, and empowers positive choices and resiliency in young people. Learn about methods that invite the co-creation of a culture of peace and respect, and experience activities that help young people of all ages, from toddlers to young adults, explore and develop universal values and positive social and emotional skills. Living Values Education is a comprehensive values education approach being implemented in more than 60 countries.

This workshop is highly recommended for adults who wish to help young people optimally explore and develop values. Please join us to:

  • reflect on the role values play in your life, schools, communities and the world;
  • learn about the LVE Approach and the process of developing values;
  • refine acknowledgement and active listening skills that allow adults to deal with young people's resistance more easily and effectively;
  • learn about non-violent discipline methods to help all feel and be safe and respected;
  • experience relaxation/focusing exercises that help young people be more centered and better able to self-regulate;
  • have more than 140 activities to help young people develop 12 universal values and positive intrapersonal and interpersonal social and emotional skills; and
  • be comfortable facilitating a process that builds positive social skills, drastically reduces bullying and has young people resolving issues with the language of values within months, inside and outside of the classroom.

Results: The most frequent themes noted by educators implementing Living Values Education are positive changes in teacher-student relationships and in student-student relationships both inside and outside the classroom. Educators note an increase in respect, caring, cooperation, motivation, and the ability to solve peer conflicts on the part of the students. Aggressive behaviors decline as positive social skills and respect increase. LVE helps educators hone quality teaching skills to create a safe, caring, values-based atmosphere for quality learning. Young people learn to use the language of values to reflect on challenges and generate positive solutions. Please see our website for research results and success stories.

Parents benefit immensely from this approach and note improved relationships, more peace and cooperation in the home, and an understanding of how to help young people develop positive and protective social skills, and deal with bullying and media.

Diane Tillman will lead both workshops. Diane is a former School Psychologist, Licensed Educational Psychologist, MFT, and the primary author of the award-winning Living Values Education Series of books. Her most recent book is "Nurturing with Love and Wisdom, Disciplining with Peace and Respect: A mindful guide to parenting".

Ed Wondolowski, Natasha Panzer and Stephanie Kerr will be co-facilitating the retreat in New York at the Peace Village Learning and Retreat Center. Ed Wondolowski is an Emeritus Professor of Management, Bentley University, and a Director of LVEP, Inc. Natasha Panzer taught and coordinated LVE activities at Mizzentop Day School, a private K-8 school. Stephanie Keer is the Education Solutions Manager at Konica Minolta and an adjunct Professor of Psychology, New York University.

Annie Jorgensen will be co-facilitating the retreat in California. Annie has a master's in Educational Counseling. A retired primary and special education teacher, she taught LVE for ten years in the classroom, with stellar results.

Cost: There will be a $40 charge for the workshop to help cover LVE expenses. For those staying at the retreat center, please plan to make a separate donation for meals and accommodation.

Only you can make yourself happy - Sr Shivani in Boston

17 July 2017

SOURCE: India New England News ( published on July 9, 2017

FOXBOROUGH, MA–Brahma Kumari Sister Shivani, an electronics engineer-turned Raja Yoga meditation teacher and host of Awakening with Brahma Kumaris television program, visited Boston for the first time and drew over 900 people on 4th of July in Foxborough, MA.

During her discourse on “Awakening: Inner Happiness and Freedom,” sister Shivani kept drawing attention of the audience to just one point: only you can make yourself . She emphasized that source of true happiness cannot be found outside but inside.

“Only you can make yourself happy or unhappy. No one else can,” sister Shivani told the packed hall at the Ambrosia Weddings & Events facility in Foxborough.

Sister Shivani, greeting everyone with “Om shanti: I am a peaceful being,” invoked a moment of silent reflection, inviting each to personally explore and open to the feelings and experience of inner happiness and freedom.

What does independence truly mean to me, the inner being?  Sister Shivani, in her unique personal style, engaged all in thinking practically about the connection between thoughts, beliefs, feelings, inner stability, and freeing ourselves from dependence on outer stimulus (objects, events, or people).

She offered clear and practical steps toward the Raja Yoga path of true self-independence.  By empowering oneself to take responsibility for one’s own creation, one’s own thoughts, she said, that one can choose to create a life destiny of happiness.  “Today is my independence day,” she said, incorporating the message with the celebrations of the US Independence Day on 4th of July.

Sister Shivani invited everyone to experience more of what she had been sharing by visiting a local Brahma Kumaris center.  As guests left the hall in peaceful, reflective silence, each received a sweet and a personal blessing card with an angel.

The event was organized by the New England Brahma Kumaris and was part of sister Shivani’s first national tour of the United States.

Sister Mohini, president of the Brahma Kumaris in the Americas, greeted sister Shivani and guests via a video message.  On behalf of the community, INDIA New England News presented sister Shivani with an award for Spiritual Leadership.

Honoring Sister Shivani on behalf of the community. From left to right: Upendra Mishra, Dr. Manju Sheth and Sister Shivani

Dev Lingadevaru and Rita Cleary, co-coordinators of New England regional Brahma Kumari activities, welcomed her on behalf of the Brahma Kumaris Boston/New England teachers and students hosting the event.

Cleary and eight Brahma Kumari Raja Yogis from diverse backgrounds shared their insights and personal experiences of awakening.  Brahma Kumari sister Elizabeth Padilla sang “We are One Family” and “Om shanti, I am a peaceful soul.”

Brahma Kumari Kala Iyengar, MD,  director of the Brahma Kumaris Peace Village Retreat Center in New York, offered the possibility of spiritually awakening with loving guidance, and connecting to the Source of inner happiness and inner freedom.  She likened awakening with Brahma Kumaris to being awakened by God’s sweet mothers.

About 80 volunteers helped organize the event in traditionally busy 4th of July holiday.

“It was a great pleasure for the New England Brahma Kumaris centers to host sister Shivani and invite so many people for the program. All the volunteers helped in making this event happen with lot of enthusiasm and without stress,” said Lingadevaru. “For every participant,a  snack pack was given and these were cooked and packed by the volunteers with a lot of love and peace. We understand that due to holiday many who wanted to come could not come. We do hope they come to our centers to take benefit of the teachings of the Brahma Kumaris in the near future.”

The Brahma Kumaris offer meditation classes and practical Raja Yoga courses in 5 locations: Watertown; Cambridge; Shrewsbury; Providence, RI; and Manchester, NH.  Call 617-926-1230 or visit

Sister Shivani focused her talk on finding illusive ‘happiness’ in the materialistic world and to learn to increase one’s ability to find contentment and love. The happiness should be long lasting and unlimited. It is a universal feeling and belief that happiness comes from outside, be it from relationship, achievement, material possession etc. Child is conditioned to believe that if parents are unhappy how can he be happy? And this is not true, asserted Sister Shivani. Raja Yoga is key to overcome this belief and myth It is also for resolving insecurities helps laying foundation for overcoming despondency dejection and resulting depression through meditation.

Meditation is the journey inwards, a journey of self-discovery or in fact, re-discovery. Meditation is time taken for quiet reflection and silence, away from the hustle and bustle of daily living. Taking time out enables us to come back to a centered place of being.

In our modern world, the pace of life is growing ever faster and we are losing touch with our true inner peace and power. When we no longer feel grounded, we can experience ourselves pushed and pulled in many different directions. It is at this point that we experience stress and a feeling of being trapped.

Gradually, over time, this feeling leads to illness and disease and our mental, emotional and physical health are thrown out of balance.

Raja Yoga meditation is a form of meditation that is accessible to people of all backgrounds. It is a meditation without rituals or mantras and can be practiced anywhere at any time. Raja Yoga meditation is practiced with ‘open eyes’, which makes this method of meditation versatile, simple and easy to practice. Meditation is a state of being in that place just beyond every day consciousness, which is where spiritual empowerment begins.

Spiritual awareness gives us the power to choose good and positive thoughts over those which are negative and wasteful. We start to respond to situations, rather than just reacting to them. We begin to live with harmony, we create better and happier, healthier relationships and change our lives in a most positive way. Sister Shivani gave various day to day life practical examples to explain the substance of Raja Yoga in daily life to achieve inner infinity of happiness and removes inner negative vibrations.

Brahma Kumaris is a spiritual university, global community of people learning how to increase one’s ability to live with love, ways to feel start feeling great with inner harmony, honesty, friendship and peace.

BOSTON—We all wonder about our destiny, how is it created and can we change it? Brahma Kumari Sister Shivani, an electronics engineer turned Raja Yoga meditation teacher, says that one cannot escape one’s past karma, but it can be changed by present karma.

In an exclusive video interview in Chai with Manju celebrity interview series, sister Shivani explains how to change the past karma and thus change the destiny.

“Destiny is created by our past karma, and gets influenced by our present karma. So both have very important role to play,” she says. “Present karma is more powerful. Power is use your present karma.”

Sister Shivani also talked about spirituality and the power of the present.

“Spirituality is not a different way of living. Spirituality is the tool, the compass, which guides me in my normal day-to-day living–whether personal, professional life, family life. That is spirituality,” she said. “My power lies in the present moment.”

Awakening to Love and Forgiveness - Sr. Shivani Debuts on the Huffington Post

2 July 2017

Source: The HuffingtonPost ( 06/23/2017 04:15 PM EST. Author: Sr. Jenna

This is the age for a huge spiritual awakening whether you want to accept it or not. We are being urged gently, or by force, to turn inwards and upwards. What if your spiritual awakening becomes a tool to help uplift the whole world?  In an attempt to awaken the atmosphere of love, kindness, happiness, and forgiveness, the Brahma Kumaris in the United States believes it will.  The more we move inward and begin to truly check our thoughts and align those thoughts to God’s pure vibration, we can call that an awakening.  The energy around the North Eastern shores of the United States welcomes Sister Shivani, a Raja Yoga Meditation Teacher who has been studying spiritual knowledge and practicing the ancient technique of Raja Yoga Meditation, as taught by the Brahma Kumaris for the past 20 years.

BK Shivani completed her Electronics Engineering graduate degree as a Gold Medalist from Pune University in 1994 and also served for two years as a lecturer in Bhartiya Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, Pune.

Since 2007, she has been on-screen in India, USA, UK, Asia Pacific, Africa and Australia, through the presentation of practical spiritual understanding on the TV program ‘Awakening with Brahma Kumaris’. The program has helped people overcome mental stress, depression, addictions, low self-esteem and unhappy relationships, as they take personal responsibility for their lives.

The Awakening Tour began on June 20th in Great Neck, New York with a room filled with an audience captivated by her simple message, “ change your thoughts, change the situation.” Sister Mohini, President of the Brahma Kumaris in the Americas, shared beautifully that for us to remain awakened, “ think in peace.”  So simple and so easy.

In times of great confusion and despair we can become numb, maybe even disillusioned to the point you no longer care what happens to anyone or even for your self.

But, when we choose to awaken our lives, we declare our lives are worthy of love, power, and optimism. We begin to take charge of our lives and stop blaming others for the way our lives have turned out.  This is our time to get inspired and awaken to love, forgiveness, happiness and more.

We’re living in a time when we can consciously participate in our own spiritual awakening. And when we decide to do this, we uplift those around us and we uplift our humanity.  Join the Awakening Movement, and get inspired to love fiercely and speak purely.

Are you experiencing “an awakening”? What does awakening mean to you?  Share your experience with us in the comments below.

BKs Participate in Interfaith Celebration at Los Angeles Islamic Center

20 June 2017

On Sunday, June 11th, the Brahma Kumaris were invited by the Islamic Center of Los Angeles to participate in a panel that discussed the significance of fasting traditions practiced by different faith/religions. There were 8 panelists who represented the Zoroastrian, Buddhism, Vedanta, Sikhism, Jewish, Christianity, Islam and Brahma Kumaris faiths. About 150 participants from the various faith groups were present in the gathering.

The event started with a short welcome from Jihad Turk, the director of the Islamic Center of Los Angeles. He explained the significance of observing fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, eating kosher food and offering iftar (meals) to others as a form of charity and humility. Then event then continued with the sharing of each panelist on their fasting practices. Sister Vino from Los Angeles represented the Brahma Kumaris and shared on the satvic diet principle that the Brahma Kumaris practice and the life-long ‘fasting’ from wasteful thinking in order to keep a healthy body and a peaceful mind. Brother Dennis and Sister Kristina also represented the Brahma Kumaris in the gathering. Further, the participants asked questions to the panelists regarding their fasting traditions. Many were impressed with the Brahma Kumaris on their simple lifestyle yet profound character.

They were touched by the simple approach of the Brahma Kumaris as Sister Vino emphasized ‘being the mother of my inner child’ where we need to be observant of our internal world of emotions and needs. She shared on how ‘We don’t see the world through a window, but we see the world through a mirror’ which translates to how much the view of the world is a relative subject which depends on each one’s perspectives. Thus, keeping positive and clear perspectives about the self can greatly influence how we perceive society and other various faiths. Sister Vino shared on how the genuine purpose of everyone is the same despite the differences in the customs and traditions that each one follows. Our unified purpose is to reach our purest self and connect with the highest Being/God. In the end, they personally expressed their gratitude to Sister Vino on how they were inspired to be more conscious of their thoughts and life-style practices so they can improve their inner wellbeing. The event ended with the breaking of Ramadan fasting and everyone were served Iftar (meals) by the Islamic Center of Los Angeles.
