Just as stress and negative thinking are now known to cause various illnesses, the reverse is also true. A positive mindset, meditation and other practices can and do heal. Speaker : Jan Alcoe

 

Jan Alcoe is a registered clinical hypnotherapist with a background in research, training and publishing in health and social care. She co-founded Pavilion Publishing in 1986, and directed the company for 20 years. Jan used the ideas behind Values in Healthcare, and her personal experience of cancer, to develop “Lifting Your Spirits: seven tools for coping with illness,” a practical guide with 2 CDs for patients coping with serious illness.  She then created a second CD-based self-help guide called “Heart of Well-Being: seven tools for surviving and thriving.”  Jan was also involved in editing, co-writing and producing Values in Healthcare: a spiritual approach, a modular development programme for healthcare practitioners. All of the above products were published by the Janki Foundation for Spirituality in Health Care.

Brahma Kumaris are Offering Free Daily Meditations during Lockdown in London

London (UK): The Brahma Kumaris, the home of Raja Yoga on Pound Lane in London, has seen thousands join their online meditations in recent weeks.

 

They are now offering daily morning and evening meditations, open to the public, as well as other activities which change from week to week.

 

BK Sister Maureen Goodman, Programme Director at the Brahma Kumaris Global Co-operation House, said: “We have been getting a great response; there are more people joining online that would fit in a room.”

 

“We are doing some activities that are for our own students, but we are doing many things that are daily public activities.  It looks like people are passing it on to others, and are very keen to connect.”

 

She added: “There’s still quite a lot of fear around, and uncertainty. Some people are coping very well with the lockdown, doing things with their family, but some people are not coping so well.  In Italy, there’s a demand on mental health services now because of isolation, so it’s really important we try and prevent ourselves from getting to that point where we feel that degree of stress.”

 

She said the guided meditations offer people the opportunity to let go of outside circumstances and go within themselves, where they can, with practice, feel greater stability.  You need to have an anchor, and that anchor has to come from within you, because that’s where you find stability,” she said.

 

“Give yourself time to pause, find space, get a little help from the meditation commentary, which can offer a sense of stability. People have found that useful.”

 

She also said that the sense of community helps; people are on their own but they are not solitary. “People like to feel that they are connecting with something that is connecting with others. They aren’t meditating in a solitary way. I found that gives people a lot of energy.”

 

“Instead of thoughts getting caught up in all the fear or worry of what’s going to happen, how’s it going to happen, when’s it going to end, meditation offers a chance to to be present right now and experience inner peace.”

She said it can offer different perspectives, and offer clarity.  “It’s like clearing away the clutter. A lot of thinking is not useful to us.”

 

Daily live meditations are offered every morning, from 10:30 am to 11:00 am (BST, UK time), and a guided 30-minute meditation to “Step into Love” from 7 pm to 7:30 pm (BST, UK time).

Letter from Spanish Family

Dear Global Family,

 

Special greetings of peace from the BK family of Spain. We extend our loving best wishes for the global family to be fine, healthy and in a good spiritual stage.

 

Fortunately, the BK family is fine, but as you know Spain is one of the countries in which the pandemic has hit more strongly. And it is also one of the countries with more severe restrictions of movements. Now the situation is getting a bit better in terms of the number of infections and deaths and in a few days we will be allowed to go out for a walk.

 

The pandemic and subsequent lockdown has raised different attitudes and emotions in people. On the one hand there is fear and stress of course, not only fear to get infected, fear to lose the job as well. Many companies are closing down or have already stopped their activities, and subsequently unemployment is rising.

 

On the one hand, difficult times in terms of material comforts are coming. However, on the other hand, this unexpected situation has raised very positive attitudes in people. In many ways: of course all health staff, the military, the social servers, the volunteers, that are collaborating untiringly, putting themselves in danger. But also people in general are respecting the strict measures of the lockdown for the general safety, and applauding from the balconies and windows every day at 8 pm. It is very touching to see this explosion of gratitude from people from all the flats applauding the servers that are helping in this situation.  Another positive effect of the lockdown is that families have time to be together at home, and do activities together, they have plenty of time.  

 

Another effect of this unexpected situation has been to increase the interest for meditation and spiritual knowledge. The BK centres are closed since the starting of the lockdown as are all shops and social events. Previously, before the pandemic, we had already some service on-line and through YouTube, but, with the centres closed we accelerated strongly this service. We are doing different activities online: meditation 8-8.30am, class with meditation 10.30am three days a week, and a short talk with meditation 7-8pm every day. The audience is very large, especially in the evenings, some days nearly one thousand people attend in the evenings. In many Spanish speaking countries of America there are numerous participants as well. We have seen that a short talk about an interesting matter and a long meditation about the same matter is very attractive. The sessions are recorded, and they are in the public domain on YouTube, in some of our channels. And they receive thousands of visits.  So we are witnessing that the situation has been a great push for us to take a big jump into the service online.  

 

Another good surprise from this lockdown has been the acceptance of the Raja Yoga course. One session of two hours a week, four sessions in total, has been attended by a thousand people. After the basic course, the course of deepening in Raja Yoga is given, previous registration. 700 hundred people have registered and shown lots of interest to follow it.

 

The BKs are happy as well with all this service, and many are collaborating, preparing the sessions technically, creating information for the social media prior to the sessions, and after the sessions, and helping in the chats during the sessions. There is a lot of participation and cooperation. Some BKs have expressed their view that all this communication and service is uniting the Spanish BK family even more.

 

We are following the international plan of tapasya as much as we can, and we are enjoying the special classes and weekly meetings with Sister Jayanti and Sister Mohini. The tapasya we are doing at a global level is creating the proper atmosphere for this flourishing of service. The subtle presence of Dadi Janki is giving us a lot of strength as well in these special moments of drama.
