News of Passing Away Of Sr. Marianne Irene Barkman of London

5 January 2024

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Following a lengthy illness, Sister Marianne left the body on 18 December 2023. Marianne was born in Leiden, Netherlands, on 18 December 1944. First child to loving parents, Carl and Irene Barkman. Her father was an author and later in his life became an ambassador of Japan, Indonesia and Greece. Marianne had a younger sister, Heleen who lives in France and late brother, Frank.

Due to her father being posted in different countries as a diplomat, all three children were brought up in a variety of cultures, and had a wider experience of life than their counterparts in the Netherlands. As such, in their adult lives, but for Frank (deceased) Marianne and her sister settled outside their native country. The UK became home for Marianne where she lived and worked for most of her adult life.

In her early life Marianne had opportunities to help her parents with hosting many dignitaries at their home being on first name terms with the guests. Later in life Marianne was never phased by someone’s position and became a host in her own right as she fulfilled her purpose in the areas of corporate administration, alternative health care and spiritual service.

Developing the skill in four languages, Marianne studied at two secretarial colleges, in Cambridge and later in London, and worked in various senior Personal Assistant capacities in the UK and the Netherlands. In addition to her interests, Marianne pursued her lifelong interest in alternative healthcare.

Marianne’s journey with the Brahma Kumaris started in the late 1980’s when, as a member of a women’s group, her search for spirituality led her to visit Madhuban, Mount Abu, as part of a tour of India.

During her many years as a BK, Marianne spent time in Greece in early to mid-90’s teaching English as a foreign language and serving at the centre. She returned to the UK in the mid-90’s and was instrumental in starting The Janki Foundation for Spirituality in Healthcare.

In early 2000, Marianne immersed herself into setting up and coordinating the service activities for the Watford Centre.  The centre played an essential role in successfully collaborating with the wider community.  Marianne is warmly remembered for the part she played:

“She played an extraordinary role, not only in running the BK centre there, but as part of Watford Interfaith, being quite a dynamic helper in things WIFA was doing. Her quietness and devotion I am sure will long be remembered”.  Judith.

“Marianne was a wonderful teacher and friend, she has helped me a lot”.  Marie, Watford Student.

“Despite her many health challenges Marianne was enthusiastic to share her spiritual understanding with others.  Whatever she found helpful her first thought was to share it.  She had a talent for getting people on her side to co-operate with a project and inspire others to do the practical tasks to accomplish her aim.

A colourful and loving personality, Marianne was very generous with her time to support people and help where she could”.

After many years in Watford, Marianne moved to Worthing and in 2015 she resettled in Willesden, London.  The final farewell took place on 4 January 2024.

We send our good wishes in Baba’s remembrance to Sister Marianne and her family.

With love,

In Baba’s yaad,

Sister Nina Rama of London Passed Away

31 December 2023

Dear Brothers & Sisters, Sister Nima Rama of London, passed away peacefully on Thursday, 14 December 2023. She came to Baba in the early 80’s. Nima had been suffering ill health since 2013, and in November 2023 was taken to a care home. Nima loved to cook and share food with everyone. She had a strong sense of family with both her birth and the BK family. She would speak of her childhood, of her parents, brothers and sisters, and the things she learnt, including valuable health tips gained from her African heritage, with such warmth and appreciation. She was proud of her big family and all her nephews and nieces. Nima was always ready to offer her company and would enjoy reading Murli with others. Her greatest love was for people, for warm connections and helping others, so she enjoyed her work in Harrods, dressing for the part, being in such a rich environment and interacting with customers. Nima's love of people and interesting places made her a great hostess and London tour guide for BK visitors. As her health deteriorated she researched widely for alternative and natural treatments and it was a big challenge for her that she couldn’t find a natural solution and had to surrender into care. She had a very severe reaction to her regular medication for Parkinson’s disease, so much so that she refused to take it as it affected her mentally and emotionally. Nima always liked to be independent and take care of her own needs, so was always very grateful for the support the family offered when this was no longer possible. Nima was a very vibrant person when she was in her best health. She loved to share her life with others and always had interesting stories to tell. Nima had a friendly and warm personality and was always immaculately dressed. Sharing from Bijal, Nima’s niece: Whenever I was with her, she would introduce me to her friends and proudly tell them that she’d chosen my name. Before I begin her eulogy, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank her for choosing such a special name for me. Nirmala Sukhabhai Rama (Nima Rama) was born on the 31st of December 1947 in Livingstone, North Rhodesia, now Zambia. She was born to Sukhabhai Bhanabhai Rama and Sonabhen Devki Sukhabhai Rama and was the second of their seven children. As one of the eldest, she always looked out for her younger siblings. Nima started her education at Coronation Primary School and then continued her secondary education at Hillcrest High School. At school, Nima was extremely personable and had many friends. She was a very versatile sportswoman and participated in many school sports events. She excelled at swimming, the 100m sprint, relay races, long jump, high jump and other team events. Her bubbly personality made her a very loved teammate. Alongside school, she helped run the family businesses and became a savvy businesswoman. Nima was also very active in the community and enjoyed going to events. One of her favourites was Holi. Her athleticism helped her tirelessly chase her sister-in-law’s around until she’d covered them in black paint! In the early 70’s, Nima left Zambia and emigrated to London. She took several courses where she met new friends and worked part-time in a shoe store. She later landed a role at the world-renowned department store Harrods in Knightsbridge. She worked there till her retirement and over the years met many celebrities and even had the privilege of meeting royalty. One of her notable clients was Princess Diana, who frequently visited her department. Nima loved the movies and would make time to go every Friday evening. Her favourite actor was Rajendra Kumar. She also loved listening to songs with Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi. Nima became a devoted Brahma Kumari. She spent a considerable amount of her free time at the centre and helped organise many events. She made many friends there and during an annual trip to India, had the privilege of meeting Baba. Her strength, willpower and mastery of meditation helped her navigate many life challenges. In her later years, when her health waned, her spirit never did. Our visits were sweetened with chocolates and laughter, her room always hiding a stash of treats, just like the countless joys she hid in the folds of everyday life. Nima was a beacon of strength, resilience, and love. Her smile, a guiding light; her laughter, a melody that will echo in our hearts forever. As I stand here, on behalf of our family, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Brahma Kumaris community for being her companions, her friends, and her spiritual family. We would also like to extend a special thank you to her friends Natasha and Gitakaki for bringing joy and light to her during their frequent visits. Nirmalaben Sukhabhai Rama, Nima, you were not just a name or a face. You were, and always will be, a story of love, a legacy of strength, and a melody of joy that will resonate through generations. Thank you for touching our lives. Your journey continues in our hearts, eternally vibrant, eternally cherished.

The final farewell took place on 21 December, 2023. We send our good wishes in Baba’s remembrance to Sister Nima and her family.

With love, In Baba’s yaad,

Sr Jayanti

Sr. Janet Kleinman Of Leeds Passed Away

18 December 2023

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Janet was born and grew up in Leeds. She always had a great spirit of adventure and lived and worked in many places including London, Slough, Norfolk and Nottingham. This included a year working as a housekeeper for Barbara Castle, a prominent Cabinet Minister, in Harold Wilson’s government.

She came to Baba in the 80’s. Janet was incredibly creative, and loved making her own clothes. She took part in some of the early London pantos; and as a children’s entertainer many BKs will remember her as Poppy the Clown.

In recent years she had poor health and returned to Leeds where she would visit Baba’s house when she was able to. She always had a kindly word to say about people and, despite her health challenges, remained positive and cheerful. Her faith in Baba and respect for the Yagya were unshakeable.

She deeply understood the knowledge of the soul and for some time had been mentally ready to move on. For many years she kept herself going using her very extensive knowledge of homeopathy.

Friends, neighbours, health professionals and the many people she connected with all received Baba’s introduction. She is also remembered fondly by her sister Steph, who lives in the USA, and her 97 year old mother who is in Leeds.

Janet flew to Baba on the 28th November. She had chosen to have an unattended cremation which will take place at 8.50am on Wednesday, 13 December, 2023.

We send our good wishes in Baba’s remembrance to Sister Janet and her family.

With love,

In Baba’s yaad,

Sr Jayanti

Amritlal Karsanbhai Patel of Leicester, UK, Flew to Baba

16 November 2023

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

On Friday, 3rd November 2023, Amritbhai left the body and flew into Baba's lap.

Amritbhai was born on 24th July 1943, in Kenya. After spending his early years in Kenya he then relocated to India to pursue his studies in Baroda, Gujarat. In 1969 he married Bhartiben and emigrated to Leicester, UK with their two children Shailesh and Hasmita.

In 1979, Amritbhai became Baba’s child along with his wife Bhartiben. He became a regular student at the Leicester centre and both passionately embraced the Brahma Kumaris’ lifestyle. He was always punctual at amrit vela and morning murli class. He was very cooperative with everyone, especially his wife Bhartiben who would often go to GRC to do service.

He had a very sweet and easy nature and formed wonderful spiritual relationships with all whom he met. He had a great sense of humour and always performed every task with a smile. He would cook a variety of food for Baba and offered bhog on a daily basis.

He was active in Baba’s all round service whilst maintaining a lokik job. He was very fortunate in his Brahmin life and took sustenance from the Dadis and senior BK Yogi Teachers. He was a perfect example of having a balanced spiritual life fulfilling his responsibility to his lokik children and the Brahmin family.

The BK Family at Harmony House and Leicester send their heartfelt condolences to a very special diamond child of Baba. The funeral took place on Monday, 13 November 2023. We all send him our loving wishes on his onward journey.

News of Passing Away of Kantaben Dhirajlal of Kenton, Harrow, UK

9 November 2023

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Kantaben Dhirajlal Patel was born in Karamsad, India on 26 April 1936. As a young child of 7, she travelled to Uganda with her older brother Manubhai. They were two young children travelling on their own during the Second World War. She told many stories of when she travelled to Africa and the danger they faced during the air raids and she was very frightened and sick, with only her brother looking after her. Manubhai was the only one who knew what their parents looked like, as Kantaben had not seen her parents since she was a baby.

Kantaben was educated in Kampala with her five siblings. Kantaben married at a young age and set up home in Jinja with her husband, Dhirajlal. They ran a bicycle business together. They had four children, Dipika, Padmini, Chandravandan and Kalpna.

The family immigrated to the UK in 1968 because their older sister, Dipika, had a hole in the heart which required specialist heart surgery. Sadly they lost Dipika at the age of 13.

Kantaben and her family settled in the Wembley area over 50 years ago. Kantaben worked for a short while and then became a housewife. Kantaben loved to cook and feed everyone, and she was famous in the family for her Gujarati dal, Kadhi and khandvi. Anyone who tasted her dal knew straight away it was made by Kantaben!

She was very active and loved gardening, feeding the birds and doing crossword puzzles. She was very determined and nothing stopped her. There was a time when she got locked out of the house and she remembered that a window in the upstairs bedroom was open, so she asked the next neighbour for his ladder and climbed up to the open window to get back into the house. She was aged 71 at the time.

Kantaben was introduced to Brahma Kumaris in 1985, and since then, every Thursday at Amrit vela she would take fruits for Baba's Bhog and did service in this way. Kantaben also helped a lot in the kitchen with the other mothers in GCH.

She became seriously ill from early February this year, but still continued to be active until the end. Kantaben passed away peacefully on Thursday, 2 November, 2023 at the time of Amrit vela at 4.00am in the hospital.

Kantaben was blessed with a lovely daughter-in-law Mayuri and two wonderful granddaughters, Hemani and Roshni.

We send our good wishes in Baba’s remembrance to Kantaben and her family.

News of Passing Away of Kishorbhai Pattni of Leicester, UK

31 October 2023

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Kishorbhai was born in Mombasa, Kenya on the 14th July 1958. He arrived in Leicester UK in 1969 with his four brothers and three sisters, where he completed his education and worked in the family business.

In 1976, Kishor started his spiritual journey with the Brahma Kumaris and has since devoted 45 years of his life to this spiritual study. He had many personal meetings with BapDada in Madhuban. He kept a good balance of playfulness and maturity.

Kishor made one slogan very strong in his personal daily life: "Baba is my one strength and one support". He had so much love for the Yagya and the ancestor souls. He supported the Yagya with body, mind and wealth, especially contributing towards Brahma Bhojan.

Once Harmony House opened, he fulfilled his dream to move close by, and spend his retirement serving there.

Kishor had great love for service and was good at planning new ways to serve. He was always available to serve souls whether one to one or in a group. He facilitated the positive thinking course, both at the centre and at Leicester University and coached others to become facilitators. He continued to share the power of positive thinking and meditation. He loved reading the Murli and spending his time in meditation

He will be greatly missed for his cheerful disposition and constant willingness to help and serve from his heart. May the soul be guided by Baba’s love, light and peace in his onward journey.

The final farewell will take place on:
Thursday 2nd November at 11.00am

Brother Stuart Hepburn Of Scotland Passes Away

31 October 2023

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Stuart was born and brought up in Edinburgh. He had a degree in Sociology from Edinburgh University.

In 1976, he came in contact with the Brahma Kumaris in London and immediately thought of serving in Scotland. He organized an exhibition in August 1976.  Brothers and sisters from London including Sudesh Didi came for the week.  He also travelled to Peru to help establish a BK centre there.

However, it was later in the summer of 1978 that Stuart again invited Sudesh Didi to come to Scotland for a tour of the main cities. During this week, he arranged talks in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Findhorn and Aberdeen as well as at a retreat place in Perthshire. After the tour, Stuart rented a small tenement flat in Edinburgh as the first BK Centre in Scotland.

Stuart came to live and work in Ross-shire (north of Inverness) in 1990, where he got married. He started his own coaching business in the mid-nineties.

In 2005, he suffered a severe brain stem stroke that left him paralysed from the neck down and without speech, yet fully conscious and able to think. With the help of his wife Pam, he was able to show that he was aware and the doctors began to work on his rehabilitation. He not only survived but also was able to write his experiences into a book: A Most Curious Detour. The book describes the impact of the stroke on his life and his encounters with the medical system in Scotland. The book was also dramatized and performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and in Glasgow. He also wrote several articles for the ‘Daily Guardian’ published in India.

He began living in a residential unit providing full time care and then made contact again with BKs in 2007. He had had some special meditation experiences. After that, he would visit the Edinburgh Centre in a wheelchair with a carer and he even made two visits to the BK Global Retreat in Oxfordshire, the second of which was to make a presentation at a retreat for prison staff where he talked about the experience of being a prisoner in one’s own body.

In later years, Stuart was able to regain a bit of speech but was never able to move his body, only his right hand that he could use to type out letters on a light writer and manage a keyboard.

Subsequently, his health deteriorated but he was always very cheerful, managing his difficult condition with dignity and fortitude and a strong sense of humour. Pam supported him throughout and made sure he was properly looked after whether in hospital or in the care unit. Everyone who met him was struck by his very powerful presence and benefitted from his company.

In October 2023, he became very unwell and after a difficult week in hospital, accompanied by his wife, left the body on Friday, 13 October, 2023.

Everyone who knew Stuart remembers his sharp wit, sense of humour, honesty and directness. He was a great inspiration to many.

A private direct cremation took place on the 24th October.

We send our good wishes in Baba’s remembrance to Brother Stuart and his family.

With love,

In Baba’s yaad,

Sr Jayanti

Brother Arnold of GCH, London, Flew To Baba

31 October 2023

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Arnold was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1945. He studied English Literature and had several careers including film and photography and providing voiceovers for film and radio. He practiced traditional Chinese medicine in the NHS and trained acupuncture students. Before he retired, he was a senior lecturer at the School of Integrated Health, University of Westminster and facilitated hospital doctors and primary care physicians in London in developing their consultation, teaching and clinical supervision skills. He has published on traditional Chinese medicine, primary health care and the history of film.

In the mid-1990’s Arnold became a regular meditation practitioner at the Brahma Kumaris Global Co-operation House. He often facilitated sessions for BK students and the public. Together with his wife Sarah, Arnold made a significant contribution to the Janki Foundation for Spirituality in Healthcare. He was a member of the core team that produced the training programme for healthcare workers, Values in Healthcare: A Spiritual Approach (2004) and facilitated trainings in many parts of the world. More recently he was part of a team running regular meditation sessions - initially in person and later online - for staff and patients in two major London hospitals - something that really spoke to his heart.

Arnold was loved by everyone. He loved ‘Drishti’ (exchange of spiritual vision) and connecting with souls on a deeper level. He won everyone’s heart with his genuine care and love. He never gave up on anyone and was always compassionate. He had a great sense of humour that helped him through a very difficult illness, smiling until the last moment. He left very peacefully at home with Sarah by his side and his spiritual family and friends around him on 23 October. As a close friend wrote to Sarah, “Thank you for bringing Arnold to us.  He was so easy to love.”

Please see separate notice of the final farewell that will take place on Friday 3 November. We send our good wishes in Baba’s remembrance to Brother Arnold and his family.

With love,

In Baba’s yaad,

Sr Jayanti

Sister Avril Ann Humphries from Cardiff Passes Away

21 October 2023

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Sister Avril Ann Humphries from Cardiff flew into Baba’s lap on 10 October, 2023, at the age of 80. It was nearly 40 years since Ann had taken Baba’s Course along with her close friend Elsie (who left her body in 2008). They had been searching spiritual groups together, and both straightaway recognised Baba. “Well, this must be God!” they said.  They were Baba’s first students in Wales.

Everyone knew Elsie, but Ann was often incognito. Wherever she went, she left no trace behind, as though she hadn’t even been there. With her long flowing hair and full-length skirts, she was fairy-like. However she was very tough inside and practical too, enthusiastically taking up the most menial of tasks. She could sleep happily on the floor with no mattress, as when sleeping spaces were in high demand. Always very independent, she loved to go off into the wilds, sometimes cycling long distances. In the last few years she lived with her daughter and family, but missed her own home with its beautiful Baba’s Room, and planned to move back there this year.

Whatever happened in her life, it was Baba, Murli and Baba’s Family that were her main support. Visiting London meant a great deal to her, starting with her stays in Pavitra Bhawan in the 80s. So did GRC and, of course, Madhuban.  She loved to talk over the times in Madhuban when there was only Pandav Bhawan, when the meetings with Baba in Om Shanti Bhawan were so close, and the Dadis, Dadas and Madhuban niwasis knew us all! She quietly contributed a lot to Baba’s Yagya in various ways, and has played crucial roles in Baba’s work in Wales. She never liked a fuss, and really didn’t want anyone to know if she was ill or had some difficulty.

Taking medications felt very foreign to her and although hospital stays had become more frequent, she wanted to let nature take its course, and on the phone a few days before she flew away, was clearly quite calm at the thought of possibly leaving the body soon. It is good to think that she is now free.

Some spontaneous lines from her Wales and South-West UK Family:

“She was as light as a feather and her feet never seemed to touch the ground.

“...immense gratitude and privilege to have spent time with this special walking talking deity.....feelings that used to come up when in her company…

“Free at last... loves freedom our Ann…I'll remember her as my social work buddy.

“It has been a privilege to have known Ann. Will be missed by all. Wish her all the best on her onward journey.

“The sparkle in her eyes and her smile will stay with me. I’m sure her long and deep love for Baba will have carried the soul into His arms.

“Our Ann brings her Baba’s knowledge into practice. While leaving her body, I think she is only remembering Baba.

“Ann’s sense and joy of freedom were expressed in her subtle actions and interactions with others. Quiet and determined, deeply clear within herself.

“Was recalling her 80th birthday at the gathering. She was always calm, powerful, strong, and content. Always in Baba’s canopy of love. I remember her as always being so independent.

“Such a beautiful radiant, elegant Angelic Deity soul. Her grace and patience as she sat wrapping toli. Her cheeks aglow with love and light with a content and gracious smile at ease with all aspects of the task in hand. Never once did she complain or gripe about her situation.

“…her immense energy of love for Baba, study and her spiritual family….full of respect for every soul. Sweet sweet soul on a most beautiful journey...

“…this last year…she wanted to make the most of every moment so enjoyed outings with us…wanting to not waste any time at all and spent weekends with me studying and churning. Her family have just said the same thing to me that Ann was always studying and taking notes.

“Such a kind and easy going soul. Shared a room with her in Worthing. Wonderful soul. She shared her tough past without any bitterness.

“…having heard that Angel Ann has flown to Baba, I can only imagine Baba coming half way to meet her.”

If you would like to know about the funeral arrangements, please send an email to cardiff@uk.brahmakumaris.org and we will let you know as soon as the date is fixed.

We send our good wishes in Baba’s remembrance to Sister Ann and her family.

With love,

In Baba’s yaad,

Sr Jayanti

Sister Joan McCarthy of GCH, London, UK, Flew to Baba - Final Farewell: 29 August

25 August 2023

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Sister Joan was born in Woolwich, South London on 12 January, 1936.  She had a brother and a sister.  She had serious illnesses as a child and at one point she was in bed so long she had to learn to walk again. During the war the children were evacuated to South West England where she got on well with her host.

Later she worked in a bank and also had a dog grooming business. She met the Brahma Kumaris when she was living in a flat in South London in January 1978. In the summer of 1980 she joined three other sisters in one of the first Shakti Bhavans of London in Olive Road. They soon found another Bhavan which could accommodate a large Shakti Army, and while the renovations of 8 Dartmouth Road were going on she cooked meals to help the BK workers keep going. Then in February 1981, Joan and other sisters moved into 8 Dartmouth Road which was later known as Pavitra Bhavan.

She would spend a lot of time in Baba Bhavan and was close to Dadi Janki, Sudesh Didi and Sister Jayanti.  Dadi would always acknowledge her as her contemporary in the class. She taught the Raj Yoga course and was on hand to drive visitors and teachers around.

Later she moved to a little house in Dollis Hill that Dadi Janki inaugurated, and during that time of her life she endured arthritic pain and had several hip replacements. Despite her health challenges she always kept the desire to become well again to serve and travelled a lot and shared spiritual knowledge in Trinidad and other places in the Caribbean, Dubai, Gibraltar, Scotland and many more.

She had a great love of singing and performing and would often sing at cultural events and later had a part in the pantomimes at Global Co-operation House. Joan had a good rapport with younger members of the BK class such as those whom she acted with in pantomimes and with Shailen Popat with whom she shared a birthday.

In 1996 she was part of a small group who were inspired to create a charity to support the Global Hospital and Research Centre in Mount Abu, India.  This charity later went on to become The Janki Foundation for Spirituality in Healthcare.

Joan had a great love for the BK gathering and moved to an apartment opposite to Global Cooperation House and for many years was part of the team that read the mid-morning Murli and also served in the Murli proof-reading team. Joan was ever ready to serve as Baba’s instrument and was an inspiration for many. In the last couple of years she needed constant physical care, however until her last days was very alert and cheerful.

She peacefully flew into Baba’s lap in hospital on 15 August.

The final farewell will take place on Tuesday, 29 August as follows:

The hearse will arrive at GCH forecourt at 11.45am

Sr Jayanti
