Update on the Volcanic eruption in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Sr Myrna in Barbados shares that they are seeing and breathing the ash 150 miles away and has sent the following notice provided by authorities. Sister Shelan, who is on St Vincent, was safe when last contacted.

Event: St. Vincent’s National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) confirmed several eruptions at the La Soufriere volcano with ash plumes up to 20,000 feet on April 9. The ash cloud is moving east from St. Vincent with ash fall reported as far southeast as Argyle International Airport, which is located approximately 12 miles away. Heavy ash fall with poor visibility is reported in the evacuation zone, and the Seismic Research Center at the University of the West Indies (UWI) reports the ash column is falling back down around the volcano and surrounding area. Communities across mainland St. Vincent will experience varying degrees of ashfall. The Grenadines may also be affected. Mandatory evacuation for all residents in the red zone continues.

Air operations at Argyle International Airport are currently suspended.

The UWI Seismic Research Center reports that ashfall may also be experienced in Barbados and St. Lucia.
Cruise ships berthed in Barbados were sent to St Vincent to help in the evacuation and in the transport of persons to other islands, (St. Lucia . St. Kitts, Grenada, Dominica and Barbados.)

Local action suggested

Follow local guidance and evacuate to the nearest shelter or as directed by local authorities.
Remain vigilant and maintain active awareness of local conditions (including seismic activity and tsunami possibilities).
Limit outdoor activity and wear masks (N95 ideally) when outdoors
Close windows and use air filters if available indoors.
Assist Neighbours wherever help is needed.

Shiv Jyanti 2021

This years Shiv Jyanti was celebrated with newness:

Hoisting Baba’s flag: For the first time Baba’s flag was hoisted in front of the Center, on front lawn. A 20 ft flag pole was installed for this special ceremony. We all felt a sense of intoxication in hoisting and seeing baba’s flag flying high - 20 ft up in the air.

Outdoor Shiv Ratri program: This year’s candle lighting, cake cutting and outdoor celebration of Baba’s birthday were held under under the trees. It quickly became dark due the time of the year but we continued for some time under mild outdoor lighting.
