Busy...?  ( Corona taught us to )  Press The Stop Button!

Gone are the days when 'idle' was not just a word in the dictionary, but a practical reality and life’s inclusive component. The world is dazed and squinting and so are we. When did you last sit on the window pane looking out at the squirrels or the sunset...? Or when did you last read a book on self development or spare a few minutes for spiritual relaxation...? Or when did you last spend an idle weekend shopping or with your family...? Or when did you meet your old friend for a lunch and laughed till your eyes dropped...? If you were to ever pass through a busy market place, you will have plenty of time to observe the running men and women with blank faces. Who has the time to smile...? To stop where you are and thank God for the life you have!

Being busy is now not just an activity but a disease. People who are working day and night have an obsession for it, also called workaholicism (being a workaholic). They can't sit idle and anxiety takes over when they do so. The day isn't far when humans will be called sheer machines. Today, the lifestyle of a child to that of an aged person is such that there is no scope for personal time. A student's timetable is like a train schedule. Just one after another. From school to tuitions, from tuitions to vocational classes, then to the sports complex and again to another tuition. A corporate professional’s day moves from one assignment to another revolving around the emotions of * I need, * I want and * I own, without ever thinking of rising above the monotonous existence. Is speed is what we are born for? We cannot only blame our lifestyle. There are more internal causes you would guess, like meeting expectations, pleasing everybody and reaching your idol self, your goals and ambitions is what makes you work like there's no tomorrow.

Technology can be our best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party spoiler of our lives. It interrupts our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine something wonderful and create something beautiful, because we're too busy bridging the walk from the cafeteria back to the office on the cell phone, one of the favourite pastimes of our current lifestyle.

We’ve talked of being busy for so long that we’ve forgotten that being busy was never the goal. We are not on this earth to be busy. We are here to build relationships, experience life, go places, create things, help others, or whatever else you decide. Our reasons for being will all be different but if you reflect deeply, you will realize and also feel that none of us feel we are here simply to be busy. But this thinking has lead us to think being busy is good, no matter what we’re busy with.

Being busy is not the way we should measure our worth and being busy is a not a worthy goal for any of us. Before you know it, you might get caught up being busy doing worthless things. Sadly the business world continues to train us this way as employees are expected to put in 8-10 hours of work a day even though on some days they might have only 2 or 4 hours of productive things to do. Poor training!

God's plan for enlarging and creating His beautiful kingdom of heaven, a new world order of peace, love and happiness of the future is so simple - one person telling another about God, the Savior and the Liberator i.e. giving the Supreme’s message of joyful, loveful and spiritual soul-conscious existence to each one. Yet we're busy and full of excuses.

Just remember, someone's eternal destiny is at stake, that someone who is to receive the message from you. The joy you'll have when you see that person in a liberated and joyful state not only here but in that kingdom of heaven being created will far exceed any discomfort you felt in sharing the gospel or message with him by taking out time from your busy existence.

To rise above the monotonous and busy existence , we all require a regular dosage of newness to keep our hearts and minds fresh. How can we define newness? It is a change of thoughts, feelings, words, actions, circumstances – when all or some of these deviate from the normal or are new, they give us an experience of joy. On a physical level we go on a holiday or a party, watch a movie, etc., all of these and many more such activities explained earlier in this message series, achieve the purpose mentioned above. We then get back to our daily routine of thoughts and actions, with more freshness, which makes the routine more interesting.

On a spiritual level, to become silent, to be still in the ocean of hectic, noisy action is a choice many people are now making. When this is achieved, this stillness acts on the mind like oxygen, giving the breath to both understand and enrich life. Of course, action is a necessity, an expression of ourselves through time, relationships and the roles we play. However, if we do not sometimes stop and take a breath of silence, then the mind begins to suffocate, thoughts speed like bullet trains and the brain feels as if it is in a pressure cooker. Emotions erupt and react like volcanoes, eyes become dizzy with mountains of information and the head feels like a rollercoaster. This is stress. The mind needs to come up for air, to leave the jungle of pressure, deadlines and speed and slow down and find the point of silence within.

Also a daily dose of new and different spiritual knowledge at the start of the day does the work of newness and helps us rise above the monotony. It rekindles our creative spirit. Newness in our thoughts then flows into our feelings, beliefs, attitudes, personalities or natures, perceptions, actions, interactions, relationships, etc. bringing newness in all of them and removing the stagnancy of the regular routine.

Also feeding spiritual knowledge to the mind benefits silence or meditation immensely, because meditation, which is not just a process of reducing the mind to a nil stage but the creation of positive, constructive thoughts to take the mind to a positive experience of peace and bliss, can then become an interesting, new and creative exercise each time one practices it. Spiritual knowledge is the foundation of good meditation or silence.

“Disheartenment to Optimism” – Online Dialogue with Dr. Rene Samaniego (Philippines) on 13th June

21 June 2020

Philippines : Online Forum with BK Sister Denise and Dr. Rene Samaniego

An online dialogue on the psychological and spiritual impact of disheartenment and how it can be transformed into optimism was held on June 13, 2020.  Hosted by the Brahma Kumaris Philippines, the live webinar dubbed “Disheartenment to Optimism” was led by Dr. Rene Samaniego, an award-winning Filipino psychiatrist and educator, and Sister Denise Lawrence, a Rajyogini for more than 50 years who has professional media experience with the BBC and in values education.

Psychological Perspective on Disheartenment, Dr. Rene Samaniego

Dr. Rene compared the pandemic to a nightmare in that it is disturbing, frightening and disheartening.  In the middle of this nightmare,  we need to physically and emotionally wake up. There is an awakening taking place not only individually but collectively. We look at the virus as an enemy but we can perhaps look at it as an agent of transformation towards meaning-making. The situation has called us to this reality that we are all in this together and we need to cooperate with and help each other.

The world has been driven to a PAUSE. The pause is necessary so that we, like the  computer, need to reboot and rest. While the pandemic has brought us to our sense of mortality,  it also makes us aware to value and connect with life more.  We need to answer to this huge wake-up call and reflect … on who we really are and what it is we are here for.

Everything boils down to choice, Dr. Rene said.  Hopefully, this pause that we are experiencing now will be intentional rather than imposed, that we will mindfully stop to notice that life is sacred. He ended with the poem of Rumi entitled “Guesthouse” which is  a good reminder not to resist any experience because, like any guest, they will arrive and they will go.

Spiritual Dynamic of Disheartenment, Denise Lawrence

Spiritually depleted, psychologically weak and falling apart, observed Sister Denise, the human race is in a mess and we need to think. What gives a lot of optimism, says Sister Denise, is that people are thinking for themselves which is healthy, not so much from the angle of selfishness but from the need to take care of ourselves and of each other.

It is really very good to be placed in a situation where we are forced to look within. It is beyond the capacity of any one government, religion or organization. And this kind of forum is important to be able to talk about these things. We have a right to express ourselves and look at the reality around us. If we are going to bring the sacred back, what do we mean by that?

Selected Question-and-Answer Portion

On toxic positivity (Sister Denise):

The sacred includes the dark nights of the soul which is important for the soul to go through in order to transcend personal weaknesses and lack of maturity. We have to go through these struggles in order to come out the other side as opposed to pretending that nothing is wrong. To bring back the sacred in our lives is to be real about the intensity of what humanity is going through. One of the ways this is projected into society is through the arts and to see that anything that is going on, to be sensitive.   People have to be very sharp in detecting manipulation from the advertising industry. It is very difficult to get real information. To bring the sacred we have to express the anguish that is going on and this has to do with the intensity of pain of the separation of the spirit, from the divine.

How do I know if I have achieved optimism?

(Dr. Rene):  It is important to accept the realities of life like challenges, sorrow and sadness along with joy and happiness. Life is difficult, but a big part of what makes life difficult is the resistance to the fact that it is difficult. In mindfulness practice, we accept things as they are so that we can deal with them appropriately.  From a psychodynamic perspective, toxic positivity is a projection of being happy in your life when you are actually feeling miserable. In mindlfulness it is a practice of self-compassion. This is a moment of suffering so how can I take care of myself in this suffering?

(Sister Denise):  Spiritual practice is to go inside. I am very optimistic because I understand certain spiritual truths. Having gone through a lot of opposition, I notice that there is a great power inside that is getting activated from an acceptance of how difficult things are but there is an inner resilience that comes from years and years of not giving up. That this too will pass and there is a consolidation of inner force that is solid.  It makes me confident of myself and my capacity to get through this. Wisdom and compassion emerge not only for the self but real love for the world.  There is also this energy of light and a sort of renovation coming through that I join with what makes me feel optimistic.

Summary Points:

The moderator, BK Francis Mina, a professional counselor of IOTA PHI Chapter of CHI SIGMA IOTA,  presented the following key points for turning disheartenment to optimism:

  1. Try to find meaning (with patience, reflection and humility in the experiences of fear and disheartenment
  2. With the awareness of the limitations and impermanence of life, we can learn/choose to value life and connect to it more
  3. Feelings of danger, hopelessness and helplessness are real. It is good to acknowledge and talk about the realities of life
  4. We need to take care of each other with comfort, compassion and encouragement. We even need to challenge / discern each one’s beliefs and behaviors to uplift each other
  5. It helps to reflect on one’s life (awareness and acceptance)

The webinar concluded with a guided reflection led by Sister Denise where she asked participants to first breathe deeply and breathe out the anxieties and tensions, turn the mind’s eye within to be with the self and the sacred ..…Please feel free to watch the video through this link:  https://www.facebook.com/rajayoga.makati/videos/263676284693711/

BK Philippines Address Mental Health Awareness Campaign of Department of Education

31 May 2020

Pasig City (Philippines): The Department of Education (DepEd) continues to extend assistance to its constituents amid the Covid-19 situation.  At least 600 personnel nationwide were able to learn more about Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS) and Psychological First Aid (PFA) after a three-day Webinar.

Through its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) and Bureau of Learner Support Services (BLSS), the webinar focused on the Department’s advocacy on looking after one’s mental health during the current public health situation.

The online-held event was addressed by DepEd DRRMS Director Ronilda Co and was attended by Regional and Division DRRM Coordinators and School Health and Nutrition Personnel who highlighted the importance of empathy and providing emotional support in these trying times where uncertainties may undermine a person’s mental health.

As a tool to help learners and personnel cope with the situation for this school year, DepEd eyes to utilize Remote Psychological First Aid since physical distancing measures and required health standards are being implemented. The said mechanism is grounded on the principles of Psychological First Aid: look, listen, and link.

A comprehensive talk led by Mr. Dan Paolo Yema, Assistant Professor from the University of the Philippines-Los Banos and Chair of the MHPSS Special Interest Group of the Psychological Association of the Philippines, shed light on the important considerations one should take note of when providing remote PFA.

Coping strategies were also taught by Mr. Karl Jingco and Mr. JK Anicoche from the Sining Galing Program of the Cultural Center of the Philippines on arts-based coping strategies.

BK Madett Gardiola of Brahma Kumaris Philippines focused on the importance of meditation and mindfulness in our daily lives. BK Madett has been a meditation practitioner for more than 20 years, a mother and an NGO consultant.
